JOANNA HARRISON

Joanna is an art director, scriptwriter, director and children's book writer and illustrator. She studied graphic design at St Martins School of Art and Goldsmiths. Her animated film ‘Make Up’ was accepted for competition at Annecy Film Festival and also won Movie Maker Best Amateur Film for 1973.


She joined TVC as assistant animator to George Dunning, 

renowned director of ‘The Yellow Submarine’. Joanna graduated to principal staff animator and worked on numerous films and commercials. In 1982 she helped develop (with Hilary Audus)  the book ‘The Snowman’ by Raymond Briggs into an award winning animation. She created original storylines, storyboarded, animated and also worked as a background artist on the film. ‘The Snowman’ won a BAFTA award and was nominated for an Oscar.

In 1997 she storyboarded and art directed Raymond Briggs’s ‘The Bear’, which won numerous awards including a Peabody and a BAFTA nomination. In 2011 Joanna co-wrote and Art directed The Snowman and the Snowdog. She has recently co-directed the best selling children’s book, ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’ as a half hour animated film for Channel four, for which she also wrote the treatment and script. The film was nominated for a BAFTA.

Although Joanna continues to work in animation she has also written and illustrated award winning children’s picture books that have been published worldwide, such as ‘When Mum turned into a Monster’( Harper Collins) and ‘Grizzly Dad’ ( David Fickling ).
